Człowiek Roku „Time” – to nagroda przyznawana od 1927 człowiekowi lub grupie ludzi, która w minionym roku miała największy wpływ na wydarzenia na świecie – w pozytywnym lub negatywnym znaczeniu.
To pierwszy taki przypadek w historii pisma. Redakcja uznała jednak, że zamiast konkretnemu człowiekowi nagroda należy się zjawisku – a w tym przypadku konkretnej maszynie – która miała w przyszłości zrewolucjonizować niemal każdą sferę życia człowieka.
Wśród nagrodzonych w poprzednich latach były takie osobistości, jak Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchil, Charles de Gaulle, ale także Adolf Hitler czy Józef Stalin (ten nawet dwukrotnie!). Rok wcześniej (1981) redakcja uhonorowała tym tytułem Lecha Wałęsę, a w 1994 nagrodziła nim papieża Jana Pawła II.
Jak na ironię, artykuł o komputerowej przyszłości świata został napisany … na maszynie do pisania, jako że komputery w redakcji „Time” miały pojawić się dopiero za kilkanaście miesięcy.
